Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT)
Consists of alternating levels of concentrated pressure on the areas of muscle spasm.
The pressure is usually applied with the fingers, knuckles or elbow. Once applied to a
muscle spasm, the pressure should not vary for ten to thirty seconds. After the muscle
is relaxed in this way the lactic acid will be released and the muscle should start
receiving enough blood and oxygen.
Hot Stone Massage
The stones are used to impart heat to the body either on top of or under the body.
The heat from the stones relaxes the muscles, inceases the blood flow to the area being
worked on which further accelerates the healing process. The hardness of the stones
allows the therapist to address specific problem areas with more detailed work or
deeper pressure.
TMJ Work
Massage therapy can be focused towards the reduction of tension in the masticatory
muscles, releasing tension in fascia, and elimination of trigger points.
Using isometric contraction to actively stretch muscle fibers, adding minimal
resistance for a further stretch, followed by relaxation allows for enhanced
relief of the targeted muscle. Post-isometric relaxation is an extremely
important tool for the restoration of the range of motion.
Trigger Point TherapyReturn to Top
A trigger point is an area within soft tissue structures that is characterized by
local tenderness and/or referred phenomena which can include pain, tingling,
numbness, burning or itching. Firm digital pressure clears the trigger point by
repeatedly flushing the blood and accumulated toxins out of the trigger point.
Aroma TherapyReturn to Top
Is the inhalation and bodily application of essential oils from aromatic plants to
relax, balance, rejuvenate, restore or enhance body, mind and spirit. A bacic principle
is to strengthen the self-healing process by indirect stimulation of the immune system.
The essential oil component molecules enter the nasal passages where they stimulate the
olfactory nerve. This sends messages directly into the limbic system which is located
in the brain which is the seat of memory, learning and emotion.
Swedish MassageReturn to Top
Is a variety of techniques designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them
against deeper muscles and bones and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of
blood returning to the heart. The techniques include long strokes, kneading, friction,
tapping, percussion, vibration, effleurage and shaking motions. The purpose is to
increase the flow of oxygen in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. It
shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid,
uric acid and other metabolic wastes.
Reiki TherapyReturn to Top
Is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.
It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen
"life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life
force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is
high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
AcupressureReturn to Top
Is an ancient healing art that uses the fingers to press key points on the surface
of the skin to stimulate the body's natural self-curvative abilities. When these points
are pressed, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and
the body's life force (chi) to aid healing. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points,
but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses the gentle, but firm pressure
of hands and feet. Acupressure can be effective in helping relieve headaches, eye strain,
sinus problems, neck pain, backaches, arthritis, muscle aches, tension due to stress, ucler
pain, menstrual cramps, lower backaches, constipation, and indigestion.
Chair MassageReturn to Top
Known as seated massage,or on-site massage, this technique involves the use of a
specially designed chair in which the client sits comfortably. Seated massage includes bodywork
and somatic techniques, such as as shiatsu, amma and Swedish massage, provided to the fully
clothed client in a variety of settings, including businesses, airports, and street fairs.
Deep Tissue MassageReturn to Top
Techniques that utilize deep-tissue/deep muscle massage are administered to affect
the sub-layer of musculature and fascia. It helps with chronic muscular pain and injury
rehabilitation and reduces inflammation-related pain caused by arthritis and tendinitis.
It is generally integrated with other massage techniques.
Medical MassageReturn to Top
Performing medical massage requires a firm background in pathology and utilizes
specific treatments appropriate to working with disease, pain and recovery from injury.
The therapist may work from a physician's prescription or as an adjunct healer within
a hospital or physical therapy setting.
Prenatal/Pregnancy MassageReturn to Top
Many methods of massage and somatic therapies are both safe and effective prenatally,
during labor and postpartum periods. Techniques can reduce discomforts, concerns and
enhance the physiological and emotional well-being of both mother and fetus. In the
postpartum period, it can rebalance structure, physiology and emotions of the new mother
and may help her bond with and care for her infant.
Sports MassageReturn to Top
Is designed to enhance athletic performance and recovery. There are three contexts:
pre-event, post-event, and injury prevention. Pre-event is delivered at the performance site,
it is fast paced and stimulating, it helps to establish blood flow and to warm up muscles.
The post-event also delivered on site, is to calm the nervous system and begin the process
of flushing toxins and waste products out of the body. It can reduce recovery time,
enabling an althete to resume training much sooner than rest alone would allow. When an
injury occurs, skillful massage therapy can often speed and improve the quality of healing.
ReflexologyReturn to Top
Involves the manipulation of specific reflex areas in the foot, hands, and ears that
correspond to other parts of the body. This bodywork involves applcation of pressure to these
reflex zones to stimulate body organs and relieve areas of congestion. It works with the body's
energy flow to stimulate self-healing and maintain balance in physical function. This technique
is used to reduce pain, increase relaxation and stimulate ciculation of blood and lymphatic fluids.
It is useful in stress-related illness and emotional disorders. It is also useful in cases
where an area of the body is traumatized or diseased to the extent that direct manipulation
is not appropriate.
Relaxation MassageReturn to Top
Relaxing you is the only aim. For this reason, it is one of the most complete and indulgent
massages you can have. It is usually a full-body treatment involving soft music, soft lighting
and aromatherapy oils. You will have a long, luxurious massage which will use all kinds of
techniques including long strokes, gentle kneading and rolling of skin and muscle, and perhaps
some rhythmic rocking from side to side. It is a passive treatment. It relieves stress and tension
in your muscles and will leave you oozing with a sense of wellbeing. It achieves this because of
the general benefits of massage: it improves your circulation, so your organs and skin get more
oxygen; it moves fluid through your lymphatic system. It encourages your body to digest its food,
and get rid of its toxins. It will help you to sleep better. A massage will also help un-knot any
muscles, soothe aches and sprains and encourage the skin to heal minor abrasions.
